Rutherglen has a good mix of house styles, ranging from council properties in areas like Toryglen, Bankhead, Blairbeth, Spittal and the Burgh Central itself, to posh affairs like those in Burnside. The town is also well-served by schools.

There are several primaries, for children aged between four-and-a-half and eleven years, and four secondaries: Stonelaw High, Rutherglen High, Trinity High (the Catholic School) and Cathkin High, the last two situated about two miles away in the neighbouring village of Cambuslang - Trinity at Burn Place; Cathkin on Western Road.

All these ‘big’ schools cater for pupils ranging in age from eleven to eighteen, taking them on to SQA certificates - essential requirements for university entrance.

In late 2006 work began on a new Rutherglen & Cathkin High ‘complex’ within Holmhills Park, Cambuslang and we understand that these new schools will open in August 2008.

There is also a weir a few miles downstream at Glasgow Green, which has to be raised whenever boat owners wish to pass into the tidal section of the river beyond: this almost exclusively during the boating season between April and October.

The weir - more of a mechanical gate really - exists to prevent the upper stretches of The Clyde from draining at low water, an event which, if repeated often, would cause the banks to cave in. On previous occasions when, for one reason or t’other, the gate has failed, draining has taken place.

Then you could see all the rubbish on the river bed: old tyres, pram wheels, wire shopping trolleys, rusty bicycles…you name it. They say that the entire tacky world of man lies down there, rotting amongst the weeds - a fact I shall not be the first to dispute.
